3 Tips to Control Oily Summer Skin

If you’re like me, you’re probably dreading the summer heat. Heat can bring out the worst in a person’s skin, making us sweaty, oily and our overall skin care routine much more difficult to manage. It makes it a lot easier to pass up a day outside when you’re sure the scorching sun and its heat will do your skin no good. If you want your skin to enjoy the rest of the summer, or at least make it bearable enough for your skin to breathe, try our three tips to control oily summer skin!

Wash and exfoliate your skin. The secret to keeping your skin in check is to routinely wash and exfoliate your skin – especially on your face. While many facial cleansers and exfoliators are great at removing any impurities in the skin, some can cause extreme dryness or excess oil. To prevent this, try using a cleanser with two percent salicylic acid, which will help to keep your skin balanced. Make sure you use a daily lightweight moisturizer as well, as some of us assume moisturizers aren’t needed for oily skin. Extra dry skin can also cause our skin to become oilier – so use that moisturizer!

Lessen the amount of makeup you wear. During the summer, foundation feels a lot heavier in the heat. The hot weather causes your makeup to melt into your pores, which ultimately clogs them and in turn, produces more oil. Instead of foundation, try using a tinted moisturizer, which will be lighter on your skin and will lessen the amount of oil buildup your skin produces. Mineral powders are also great for the heat, as they are light and soak up any sweat and oil leftover on your skin.

Stay away from certain foods. Believe it or not, the food you put into your body can affect your skins physical appearance such as the shine and oiliness of your skin. Try to avoid fried and fatty foods, which can cause an excess of oily skin. Spicy foods can also have negative effects on your skin, as it can induce sweat thus causing a more oily based skin type. Instead, try adding foods such as carrots, spinach, berries, avocado and broccoli to your diet. These foods are high in Vitamin A content – a powerful antioxidant that helps to combat oily skin and acne breakouts.
