What do chemical peels do?

posted in: Peels

Although there are many different types of chemical peels (Salicylic Acid, Lactic Acid, Glycolic Acid etc) and varying strengths, in general all these different peels work the same way: chemical peels dissolve the bonds between surface skin cells, causing the old, damaged skin to wash away with water and “peel” off. And the good news is that most signs of aging are contained in these surface layers – sun spots, wrinkles, scars, blemishes, etc. So once those are peeled off, the new healthy looking skin below is revealed!

Peels also take advantage of skin’s natural ability to heal itself, by basically creating a controlled wound. This is a signal for your body to begin repairing this “wound”  by producing more collagen and elastin. This is how peels improve fine lines (plumping them up with collagen) and improve skin tone (elastin holds skin tissue together).

Skin is our largest organ, and it literally gets beat up day in and day out as we expose it to UV rays, cold weather, and pollution. These environmental stressors cause the outer layers of skin to scar, blemish, and wrinkle (i.e. premature aging). Luckily our body is constantly producing new skin cells – but that cellular renewal process slows down as you get older. Using an exfoliating peel can speed up the process of skin renewal and reveal a brighter, clearer complexion with each use.
