Acne, Acne Scar Treatments, Prescription Acne Medications and Peels: From Our Mailbag

Q: Hello,
I am writing about my 14 year old daughter who is experiencing acne. She is seeing a dermatologist and is on a cleanser from them as well as Clindamycin pads and a doxycycline antibiotic. She has been using these products for almost 3 weeks now with some to little improvement. Which products would you recommend to help lighten acne marks as well as prevent any further breakouts? She has asian skin. I am not a fan of products with hydroquinone and antibiotics but I do like the idea of essential oils in your products.
A: Thanks so much for your email. I would ask your daughter’s dermatologist first, since he would know best how an exfoliator would react with the medications he has prescribed. Also, in general, we’re supposed to give a new skincare routine 6 weeks to show best results, especially with acne. Sometimes acne which had already started before the medication is just being brought to the surface, and so it makes skin look “worse” but actually acne-free skin is forming below the surface, also called “purging”.  But of course, maybe the Rxs are not working for her.
That being said, I just had an interesting comment come from an impartial reviewer from Amazon (and I just happen to know she’s Asian). She’s a top 50 reviewer on amazon, and I had given her a sample of our Salicylic Acid 2% Peel way back in July for her to test and write a review – but she’s not compensated in any way. She gave it to her teenage son, and I guess he said it burned and she yelled at me over email. Then, 4 months later, she posts this:

This review is from: Salicylic Acid 2% Daily Gentle Peel – Naturally Derived From Willow Bark (Professional Chemical Peel). BHA Beta-Hydroxy Anti-aging and and Anti-acne Peel. Best At Home Peel for Acne Scars, Wrinkles (Misc.)
When we first got this, my son absolutely refused to use it. He said it burns. So, I bought him some other acne meds. Months go by. His acne cleared up and I thought nothing more of it. Today, I noticed his acne was coming back. I asked him if he would like me to buy more cream. No, he doesn’t want the creams. He says they’re messy and they don’t work. He wants this peel. It turns out that’s what he’d been using when his skin was so clear and he’d run out. “It burns, but it works.” Go figure. This product was provided for review by Refresh Skin Therapy.

I hope that helps!

Best Regards,
