Chemical Peels for African-American Skin

posted in: Skincare tips

Chemical peels can benefit just about every skin type, and darker skin types are no exception. Many people with darker skin types don’t realize just how sensitive their skin can be to switching skin care products or cosmetics.

Peels can be an excellent solution to common skin complaints such as acne and acne scars, but darker skin types should proceed slowly and with caution when trying any new product. You can still get the results of a stronger peel by doing a few more milder peels.  It will take a bit longer, but the results will be worth it since you’re less likely to burn yourself and create scarring.

Our low acid content peels, such as Salicylic 2% and Lactic Acid 10% were designed with sensitive skin in mind, and are a great way to start using a peel, but without the risk of hyperpigmentation that stronger peels can cause on dark skin.

You read that right: stronger peels (like 30 or 50%) can actually make scars more noticeable and create new blotchy areas when used on dark skin!

Our Salicylic Acid 2% Gentle Daily peel is a great choice for oily and sensitive skin, since it’s derived from willow bark – the same ingredient used to make aspirin – so it has soothing anti-inflammatory action to it to decrease redness and irritation.

Also, don’t go straight to using a peel every day or every other – use it once, and make sure your skin reacts well.
